Subject: Another New Thing – It’s a Holiday!

…or, Your Wife Finally Explains The Weird Red Hearts Popping Up Everywhere.

Bao Bei;

So this is really your second Valentine’s Day, but we were all feeling a little shell shocked and raw for the last one, and I decided not to dump yet another New Thing on you. It is now February, however, and the proof of our love is two months old and pretty determined to kill any romance we might have even hoped to wish for this time around. So I guess our second Valentine’s Day is gonna blow a little, too.

(Though, hey, that’s not a bad idea, is it?)

So, seeing as you’re all Master of the Internets now (god, I never imagined what it would be liked to be married to a human knowledge-sponge), I thought I would send you a super-romantic Valentine’s E-Mail.

So, first question that Lucy Turn Piper must always answer for Syth Piper Turn when we come to a New Thing is: WHY???

What Is Valentine’s Day?

What is the Traditional Method of Celebrating The Holiday?

And so in the spirit of the holiday, I have picked up an ever-so romantic Easy-Curry kit for us to have at dinner, bought the second-cheapest bottle of red wine that you have deemed palatable (you’re worth it, bao bei!) and have lots of wicked plans for after the baby is asleep.

What, you think your creative wife has taught you everything there is to know in the bedroom, my sweet little virgin-before-I-got-to-you? Nuh-uh, bao bei. I still have tons of awesome tricks up my sleeve, and I learn more every day. I readfan fiction.

But in all honesty, I want to write you my very first love letter. Yes, it’s yours. My love letters will always and only be yours, Forsyth Turn, Lordling of Lysse. So here goes.

Thank You

First, I wanted to say thank you. Thank you for coming with me. Thank you for choosing me. Thank you for saving me. Thank you for letting me save you.

Thank you for your patience. Thank you for sleeping on the sofa when we got back here, so I could have my space and the time to get my head back on straight and around the fact that you were used to hurt me so much. Thank you for understanding when I said I needed you to come to therapy with me, and thank you for being up for it, even if you didn’t completely understand what it was for.

Thank you for taking things slowly. Thank you for being game. Thank you for stopping when I asked you to stop, and for touching me when I beg you for it.

Thank you for holding me when I cried, and for soothing me when I was freaking out, and for going away when I asked you to go away. And for coming back when I needed you.

Thank you for never holding it against me, or blaming me, for the traumas that were inflicted on me, and the way they made me react to you. Thank you for teaching me about right to desire.

Thank you for being enthusiastic when I needed you to be, and thank you for being Generous, Giving and Game in bed, that’s been especially fun.

Thank you for the privilege of letting me fall in love with you a second time. Thank you for letting it be on my terms.

And thank you for yelling at me for being a selfish prick about it, sometimes.

Thank you for the awesome kid we made.

Thank you for being there for me while I suffered through making that awesome kid.

I Love You

And now, for all the reasons I love you.

I love it when you look at me like this:

I love it when you grab me under the arms and haul me out of my office and away from grading papers when it’s past midnight. I love it when it’s for sleep. I love it when it’s not for sleep.

I love the way you look at our daughter.

I love the way you dance with me when no one is watching.

I love the way you are scared of the phone, still. It’s adorable. Please never stop being afraid of the phone.

I love the way you are so not even into the toxic masculinity bullshit of this realm and make funny faces at MRA doofuses.

I love watching you practice your fencing with Smoke (hot damn).

I love that you loved me more than you loved magic, and honestly, magic is pretty cool and I sometimes wonder why you gave up the ability to Speak Words for me.

I love how patient you are with wai po, and how earnest you are with your Mandarin lessons.

I love that you let me love you. Even if it is sometimes not as much as you deserve. Even if it is sometimes unfairly reluctant or tentative. Even if it took me a long time to get where we are now. Even if I sometimes wonder if it was selfish and rash to invite you to come here with me. Even if it was selfish and rash.  I love that you let me love you.

I love that you let me take care of you. And I love that you take care of me in return.

I love you.
